Festival 2018

Historien bak Nordisk Permakultur Festival

Why a permaculture festival?

The first Nordic Permaculture Festival was held in 2011 in Denmark.

The Nordic Permaculture Festival intends to open up the field of sustainability to a broader public audience with a hands-on as well as theoretical focus. The festival is an opportunity for participants from the different Nordic countries to gather and exchange information about sustainable solutions from their areas – both on a national and a local level.

The festival took place for the first time in Denmark, 2011. The initiators and then organizers, Karoline Nolsø Aaen and Tycho Holcomb, were inspired by similar permaculture events around the world, and thought it suitable for the Nordic region to share an event such as a festival. Karoline and Tycho’s goal was to create a festival, allowing it to flow from one Nordic country to the other, while sharing skills, storytelling, fun and visions for a sustainable, integrated and holistic future across the borders. The goal is now being realized.

For everybody to join, for all to share experiences, visions, lifestyles, and practical knowledge, the festival is what you make it. The festival is based on volunteers – though we acknowledge that organizing an event of this magnitude does require financially supported time. The intention is for workshop holders to share their knowledge for free, join the festival at a reduced price to cover the food and other costs necessary, and simply enjoy being a part of a global movement. Regular participants are invited to help out where needed, to take responsibility, and maybe even offer a workshop if so inclined. Volunteers may pay for their food costs, but otherwise join to carry out tasks while having a good time. The festival hence needs all helpful hands to join for future festivals.
